Nobody Told Me by Karla Rogers

Beautifully imagined and vividly crafted…

Rogers explores the self-realization, transformation, and intricacies of motherhood in her absorbing debut. Molly Fowler has always defined herself by her role as a mother, wife, realtor, and a sister and is ready for the time when both her kids will leave home to begin their lives as adults. But when that time arrives sooner than Molly expected, she realizes she is not ready. Rogers shows an excellent understanding of the human psyche, revealing a story from different perspectives: she deftly conjures Molly’s sense of displacement, who is trying to make sense of her feelings after Avery’s decision to move far away for college, as well as exploring the myriad ways the Fowlers have failed to understand one another, and perhaps themselves. The characters are wonderfully relatable, and watching them navigate the difficulties of their troubled lives is mesmerizing. A poignant read that explores parenting, teenage and young adult angst, familial bonds, marriage, and the unspoken insecurities and yearnings of motherhood.
