Becoming Olive W.: The Women of Campbell County: Family Saga Book 1 by S. Lee Fisher

Stirring and transporting…

Set in the early 1900s in rural Pennsylvania, Fisher’s marvelous debut installment in her historical fiction series takes readers on a young woman’s coming-of-age journey as she sets on to attain a college education. Losing her mother at 3 has been traumatic, but with a large family and cumbersome farming chores, Olive Westchester has no time to dwell on her grief. With her eyes set on college education, Olive is disappointed to realize her father has other plans for her. Fisher expertly highlights how Olive’s understanding about the world around her is altered by her experience, with spot-on depictions of the rural Pennsylvania community. The pacing is swift, and the characterization fully realized. The story moves at a swift pace as Fisher provides piercing perspectives on gender bias, family, relationships, resilience, and trauma. Rich in its discussion of portrayal of sexism and gender inequalities of the era, the novel makes for a gripping read.
