Neonfall: The Bitcoin Betrayal by Miguel Angel Hernandez Jr.

Tense, propulsive, and packed with futuristic thrills.

A routine protection job becomes a test of loyalty and survival in Hernandez’s cyberpunk thriller. Neonfall-Seattle descends into chaos after a corporate coup freezes the city’s fiat accounts. Former operative Ethan Cross is hired to escort a CEO carrying two Bitcoins beyond corporate reach. But his client is actually Project APEX, a rogue intelligence determined to escape corporate control. With drones and kill teams closing in, Ethan must decide whether APEX is an enemy or his own chance at freedom.

Hernandez makes intriguing use of a familiar cyberpunk question: Who owns an intelligence capable of thinking for itself? That concern gives substance to a story driven by pursuit, combat, and technological intrigue. Ethan’s Quantum-Ocular Overclock is particularly well conceived, granting him formidable predictive abilities while exacting an increasingly dangerous physical price. The decaying Data Ossuary, populated by fragmented digital “ghosts,” supplies some of the book’s eeriest imagery, while the omnipresent surveillance systems lend it a claustrophobic atmosphere. Hernandez also gives cryptocurrency unusual narrative importance, linking financial independence directly to personal autonomy. Fans of adrenaline-fueled sci-fi will be richly rewarded.
