Breezy Bakes Her Best by Lori Rotter

A sprinkle-filled romp bursting with creativity and heart.

Rotter’s playful picture book finds comedy and confidence amid a morning of bakery mishaps. Breezy Bear is eager to pitch in as her family prepares Buttercup Bakery for the day. Unfortunately, her good intentions produce one calamity after another, from airborne flour to slippery eggs and a heap of salt. With opening time approaching, Breezy must figure out whether there is another way for her enthusiasm and imagination to be useful.

The bakery setting gives Rotter ample room for cheerful physical comedy, and the rhymes lend the action an energetic storytime bounce. More appealing is the book’s willingness to let Breezy be genuinely bad at something. Her mistakes become opportunities for redirection, allowing the story to suggest that effort and aptitude do not always arrive together. Vaughan Duck’s illustrations revel in the commotion, packing the spreads with expressive reactions, tumbling ingredients, and sugary details. Breezy’s artistic experimentation also gives the later pages a satisfying visual exuberance. The cupcake-decorating activity at the close cleverly invites readers to exercise their own imaginations.

A frothy, funny ode to discovering what you do best.
