Woman: A Collection of Short Stories by V.P. Evans

woman

Remarkably moving…

Evans’s poignant debut short story collection follows a cast of women characters based in different parts of the world with each representing a different ethnic strain, but they have one thing in common: all of them contributes to the women’s experience in male-dominated society. In “W,” the pain, anger, and accumulated suffering of the ages throw a soon-to-be-mother into a whirlwind of temporary madness. The protagonist in “A” finally finds the courage to break free of a relationship fraught with jealousy and fractures and sets on to realize her dreams. Evans is economical on prose but his writing style allows for a wealth of detail, and his characters are both hefty and memorable. His reflections on cruel practices of female genital mutilations and breast flattening in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, the rape culture, and sex trafficking ache with feeling, and his straightforward prose keeps readers invested throughout. A memorable collection.
