Mom Equals Dad by RAYMOND M. PATTERSON, JR.

A compelling, reassuring, and beautifully written picture book that packs a powerful punch.

Patterson, Jr.’s heartwarming tale delves into themes of friendship, family, and inclusion as Steven and the crew are faced with yet another challenge. Centered around a special school event, the story follows students as they share breakfast with their fathers. The narrative vividly portrays the excitement and anticipation of the children, especially Steven and Juan, who are eagerly looking forward to savoring their favorite donuts. The story gradually takes a turn, delving into the emotional landscape of young Larry. With a heavy heart, he expresses his longing for a father figure to join him on his journey through life. This poignant moment illuminates a crucial theme within the narrative – the deep-seated feeling of isolation and its effects on children growing up in single-parent households. Larry’s simple words, “I only have my mom,” lay bare the central conflict and pave the way for an exploration of familial dynamics and the significance of compassion and understanding among friends.

Raymond Jr.’s characterization is excellent, with each character bringing a unique dynamic to the story. Larry, introverted and haunted by his father’s absence, finds solace in his close-knit group of friends. Steven, charismatic and compassionate, is a pillar of support for his friends during their struggles. The addition of Juan, the light-hearted and food-obsessed sidekick to Steven, adds a touch of humor to the group’s dynamics. And amidst it all, Ms. Gomez, the easygoing and community-oriented teacher, creates a safe and inclusive space for her students to thrive. Meanwhile, Principal Clark guides his students with a firm yet empathetic hand, offering both practical and emotional support. The story beautifully showcases the different forms of love and care found in both immediate and long-term relationships, from Larry’s devoted single mother who ensures his inclusion in a school event to Principal Clark’s patient guidance towards healing. The narrative flows smoothly, effortlessly weaving dialogue and descriptive prose to captivate readers. The backdrop of a school event is familiar and relatable, while the profound transformation of Larry’s character from despondency to acceptance is handled with skill. Amidst the emotional arcs, comedic elements shine through, particularly Juan’s infatuation with jelly donuts and impeccable sense of humor. In the climactic moment, when Steven’s return and Larry’s mom’s disguised appearance brings a sense of warmth and inclusion, one cannot help but be moved. The sombre illustrations beautifully compliment the poignant story. A reflective tale about the emotional complexities and the quest for acceptance experienced by children of single parents.
