Treehouse Rescue by Veronica Puig (Author), Jessica W Cooper (Illustrator)

A delightfully comforting story about courage, community, and finding safety together.

Puig’s picture book is an empathetic tale that celebrates kindness. As a storm approaches, young Mike encounters Mr. and Mrs. Carter, the caterpillars, Mrs. Birdie and her babies, and a hardworking crew of ants with nowhere safe to go. Though determined to complete his errand, he instead becomes an unlikely hero, guiding the group to shelter in his beloved treehouse.

Puig beautifully captures the emotional instinct children have to protect and care for others. Mike’s concern feels sincere, especially when he reassures the caterpillars, “Mr. and Mrs. Carter, I know a perfect place where you will be safe. Follow me!” The story’s warmth is balanced by moments of humor and delight, including Mike’s cheerful exclamation, “What are the odds! It’s a PB&J galore!” after discovering the storm shelter comes with sandwiches after all. Jessica W. Cooper’s soft watercolor illustrations lend the book a cozy, storybook feel. Together, the text and artwork create a comforting world where generosity leads the way. Sweet, uplifting, and emotionally grounded, this compassionate adventure leaves readers with the reassuring message that even the smallest acts of kindness can become heroic.
