Full of mischief and adventure, Murphey’s latest in his SF series is an exhilarating journey through alternate universes. Marta Hamilton and her partner Marshall Grissom rush to save ten-year-old Baptiste from his abusive stepfather while Gillis, Elvin, and Lexi have their own reasons for heading to the HRO Complex. In the Death Valley Days Universe, John Dexter holds Kendra Granger hostage due to her knowledge of the time-travel project. However, the greatest threat comes from a mysterious entity with a sinister plan: to take control of humanity and further its own agenda. Despite packing a lot into the story, Murphey maintains a light tone throughout, even as danger and unease linger in the background. The characters are well-developed, with their relationships grounded in real-world dynamics. The entrance of Flopsy, a power-hungry supercomputer shaped by humanity’s beliefs, adds another layer to the debate on the downsides of advanced technology. The narrative is filled with a chaotic mix of timelines and alternate realities, making for a fast-paced read leading up to the final resolution. A madcap fun.
