A reflective tale about dealing with trauma…
A young man struggles to find contentment after a traumatic experience in Bocher’s poignant novel. Mitch Lavin had always felt like an outsider, raised by his great-aunt after the tragic loss of his parents at a young age. But he finally found a sense of belonging at Widmark College on a full scholarship and playing soccer. However, bullying from classmates led him to leave for a job with Mining Consortium International. His life takes a sudden turn when he meets the lovely Emma Waterson. As they grow close, Mitch knows he must confront his past traumas if he wants to begin afresh with Emma. Despite the heavy subjects explored in the book, the third-person omniscient voice and lighthearted tone do not seek readers’ sympathy. The novel presents sexual abuse, bullying, rape, trauma and its long-term effects, PTSD, and domestic violence as harsh realities that must be confronted. Throughout the story, the reader follows Mitch’s journey to achieve inner peace and find moments of joy amidst his constant battle with his inner demons. His struggle is a continuous one, as he must learn to navigate and cope with present-day difficulties while also managing the lingering scars from his past experiences. The story’s tension lies in whether or not Mitch will break free from his traumatic past and create a new future for himself. Emma is a well-developed character with deep roots in reality, evident through her relationships with Mitch, Betty Jo, and her large Italian family. This intriguing novel is a poignant portrait of one man’s journey to finding happiness.
