Emerging From the Dark: Wish I Knew About This by Terence Ang

A thought-provoking look at recovery from stroke…

Ang offers a collection of moving stories from people in all stages of stroke recovery in his inspiring latest book. After his stroke in 2020, Ang was invited to speak at the 2022 World Stroke Congress held in Singapore. There, he met other people in various stages of recovery, caregivers, and hospital staff. The event sparked the idea for this book. Touching anecdotes dot the book, helping others to know that they’re not alone: There’s Annie, who despite a difficult road ahead has learned to take it slow; Kelvin, who embarked on an inspiring journey of health and fitness post-stroke, ending up embracing a brand new career; Lim Wei Ni who realized the value of patience after her stroke; It took almost 2 years for Kelvin to let go of the feelings of misery and self-pity after his stroke, but once it happened, it made him love and live his life once again; then there is the determined and driven JT who is out to make the best out of her difficult situation; and Chandhan who had everything going for him when he got stroke at 30. It slowed him down but couldn’t stop him. Between these stories, Ang writes about his own struggles as a stroke victim, and he does so with such honesty and vulnerability that by the end, readers will be able to understand when he sums it up, “I don’t really fit in with a crowd, and that’s ok with me. I’d rather be myself – a crazy, glorious mess who doesn’t make sense but is doing just fine anyways.” In thoughtful and inspiring prose accompanied by expertly drawn black-and-white illustrations, Ang shows how life goes on no matter the circumstances. Touching but never overly sentimental; an insightful work that delivers
