The entertaining debut installment in Boucher’s promising the Chakra Stones series is a fast-paced adventure featuring an endearing pair of teenage protagonists. Life for fourteen-year-old Jaden is not so perfect: her mother left her when she was a little girl; she’s not exactly a priority in her father’s life; and the school is almost unbearable because of bullying. The only thing that’s good is her best friend Alister. When a mysterious set of crystals transport Jaden and Alister to a secret world, the duo finds themselves embarking upon a quest to protect the Earth chakra energies from malevolent villains. Boucher’s storytelling is entertaining, brimming with wit, action, and heart, and the fantasy world she builds is rich with vivid detail. She’s also adept at characterization—from the sensitive yet determined Jaden to the sharp, good-humored Alister and the endearing Ms. Pedagogue, they all come alive on the pages. Boucher’s rendition of Jaden is particularly impressive: she vividly portrays her vulnerability and internal turmoil. A must-read.
