The Stars Forgot Us by R.J. Garcia

A captivating fantasy tale of mystery and intrigue…

Garcia’s latest is a dark, complex web of mystery, magic, and supernatural intrigue. Struggling with his parents’ divorce and his older brothers’ diagnosis of schizophrenia, fifteen-year-old Jacob Kelly is less than thrilled when his mother moves the family back to their hometown. A series of strange occurrences force Jacob to question his own sanity. But things take a dark turn after Jacob finds a mysterious girl living in the house. The tightly plotted story shines with poignant emotion, surprising revelations, and a rich portrayal of love and friendship in the face of doubt. Jacob’s discovery of Ary’s real identity and his realization that people around him aren’t what they seem on the surface propels the narrative, which alternates between Jacob’s engaging, genuinely teenage first-person voice and third-person omniscient narration. The supernatural elements are thoroughly executed, as is Garcia’s characterization, and the shocking twist toward the end packs a satisfying punch. This is a stunner.
