When I Kill You by B.A. Paris

Gripping, unsettling, and atmospheric…

Nell Masters feels watched. Strange calls, anonymous flowers, and a constant sense of unease follow her everywhere. She has reason to worry—Nell is hiding a past she’s never shared, even with her partner, Alex, who carries secrets of his own. Fourteen years earlier, as Elle Nugent, she witnessed Bryony Sanders enter a stranger’s car before the girl was murdered. Nell’s obsessive suspicion of Brett Parker nearly consumed her. Now she wonders: has her past resurfaced, or is a new danger closing in?

Alternating between past and present, the narrative sustains an atmosphere of unease and psychological strain. The novel’s strength lies in its portrayal of paranoia and the lingering cost of unresolved trauma. Nell’s fear feels credible, intimate, and steadily escalating, creating a taut reading experience driven more by anxiety than action. Secrets on all sides complicate the mystery, particularly within her closest relationship, where trust feels increasingly fragile. While the suspense remains tightly wound for most of the story, the final reveal struggles to match the momentum built throughout. The resolution arrives abruptly and feels disconnected from the emotional and psychological groundwork laid earlier. Even so, the journey there is gripping, marked by a persistent tension that keeps readers engaged until the final pages.
