Gripping and compelling… A compulsively readable book.
Hanson makes his debut with this well-written, well-researched military thriller. Patriotism runs deep in Charlie Brand’s family. Feeling the call of his country, Charlie enters the Navy and soon proves himself to be the best eyes and ears in the team. In Japan, Hadaki Yamatsumi, a farmer from a family of hard-core patriots, also responds to the call of his country. The two men are thrust on a collision course with history. Will they survive the war? Hanson’s use of alternating chapters, incorporating different places and characters’ backstories, is particularly effective in reflecting his protagonists’ deeply rooted sense of loyalty and safety. Action is in plenty and the characters layered. There’s a lot to absorb in this book of plentiful history and military maneuvers, but the reader’s patience is amply rewarded. A complex, poignant novel that delves into the questions of what is worth sacrificing for one’s country—and provides some answers, this is a World War II winner. Hanson is an author to watch.
