The Mermaid Who Wanted to Fly (Kris the Mermaid) by Micah Kolding

A breezy affirmation of self… Absolute fun.

Readers are in for madcap ride with Kris, the mermaid, as her best friends launch a mission to help her fly. Kris, the mermaid, has a single desire in her life: fly like her favorite comic book hero and help those in need. So, the friends: Eric, Duran, Santiago, Bran, and the unnamed narrator jump in, trying to invent a way to help Kris fly. And soon, it becomes clear the mermaids are not meant to fly. Now the question becomes, can Kris be a hero without learning to fly? The rhymes, though straightforward are goofy and lots of fun (“When folk are in trouble, / I’d fly to their aid/ Ably, adroitly, and quite unafraid/ And no longer stuck like a floundering fish/ That’s what I’d wish for if I had my wish!”), and will prompt those reading aloud to put on their best imitating accent. The zany illustrations and the madcap situations delightfully evoke the feverish anxiety of Kris and the gang. By turns hilarious and absurd, the story beautifully captures the intricacies of friendship, power of self-acceptance, and self-discovery.
