When the Sleeping Dead Still Talk (The Hotel #2) by Jennifer Gordon

Artfully plotted, carefully nuanced, and thoroughly readable… Terrific.

Gordon crafts a solid piece of gothic horror in this atmospheric finale of The Hotel, a two-part series. Francis Coyle, the enigmatic priest, leaves for his childhood home in Dorchester Neck after losing Isabelle to an eerie accident on the Dagger Island, but coping with her death becomes too much, and Francis finds himself in the Hotel under the care of Dr. Hughes. Readers who fell in love with the enigmatic, troubled Francis in the first book will be devastated to know he is not the man they thought him to be as his backstory unravels. Gordon does a great job of generating suspense with sections containing Francis’s conversations with Agnes and his monologues that fill a large segment of the narrative. With great dexterity and subtlety, Gordon brings the gothic setting of the Dagger Island to life, and her lyrical, subtle prose beautifully captures the eerie darkness of her story. Haunting and beautiful, the novel hits hard.
