An intricate page-turner…
In this impressive series kicker in the Enderal series, Lietzau combines psychological horror, mystery, and high fantasy with political intrigue to build a gripping fantasy. Struggling to deal with the traumatic memories of his harrowing past, ex-mercenary Jespar Dal’Varek has taken to drifting. But a cryptic job offer takes him to the tropical empire of Kilay, a bustling country on the cusp of civil war, throwing him in the middle of a sinister conspiracy. Lietzau provides plenty of moments of psychological suspense and genuine horror. A sense of pure evil suffuses Lietzau’s utterly complex high fantasy universe, which is almost as complex and immersive as that of Tolkien. The plotting is tight, and the extraordinary varied cast of deeply realized characters is there to stay in readers’ minds. Lietzau’s acute analyses of mental illness, self-doubt, and guilt combined with the subtlety and nuance of his evocative storytelling makes it a treat for readers weary of formulaic dark fantasy. This novel deserves a wide audience.
