The Languid Belly of the Beast (The Deep Space Cargoist Book 2) by JS Carter Gilson

An exhilarating ride…

The second installment in Gilson’s hard SF series has both the suspense and zip of debut book The Loneliness of the Deep Space Cargoist. Inez Stanton has a seemingly easy job this time after her brush with death during her last contract: to deliver a cargo to Free Earth, the ancestral home of humanity. But the cargo is a revolutionary on run, and to get him past the Free Earth security computers is not as easy as it seems. Despite the conspicuous theme of hard SF, the novel effectively captures Inez and Sarah’s relentless struggles with their past traumas, as well as the devastating ways the futuristic technology has affected people’s lives on Earth. The pacing is brisk, Inez’s journey to Earth crackles with tension, and all the characters, including Lui acquire real depth. This is a lean novella, but with Gilson’s panache for bringing a world to life with a few carefully chosen words it becomes an exhilarating page-turner. Readers with a taste for finely constructed hard space opera will revel in this pulse-pounding read.
