A darkly humorous, reflective literary tale…
Full of intelligent questions, Croft’s stunning latest takes the reader on the edgy journey of a young man’s path to enlightenment. The unnamed narrator is drifting through life futilely until he meets Alex, a charming, enigmatic man. As his newfound friendship becomes a path to self-discovery, dark truths unravel and harsh realities come to surface. Croft’s writing style is eloquent, making the novel very literary (“Sometimes a deaf man writes a symphony while the virtuoso plays the fool. The rhinoceros gets trapped in the quicksand and watches the flinch fly away.”). It’s through the narrator and Alex’s conversations, Croft explores philosophy of life. Initially the novel seems like a regular self-help story with the narrator seeking path in life: he is unashamedly chilled, a brilliant mind, who for the lack of enough challenges developed a laidback attitude for life in general; Alex, on other hand, is a nihilistic, an extremely self-centered man with a haughty distaste for people in general. Because of this, the reader will be tempted to conflate the narrator with the author. However, as the story progresses, it becomes darker and murkier with characters trapped in a spiral web of lies and the line between the reality and fiction blurring. It’s through this dark journey that the narrator realizes the full understanding of the whole situation. Considering life is never a bed of roses all the way through, this deeply insightful novel about attaining enlightenment solely through “living” is both thoughtful and important. The lovers of serious literature will be greatly rewarded.
