Porter delivers an impassioned examination of divine healing in the third installment of her Truth About God series, challenging one of Christianity’s most difficult questions: If God loves His children and possesses the power to heal, why do faithful people remain sick or die despite their prayers?
For Porter, the answer begins with understanding God’s character. Confronted by premature deaths and suffering frequently explained as part of an unknowable divine plan, she reaches a stark conclusion: “Something is wrong.” She rejects the idea that God deliberately sends sickness or withholds healing, arguing instead that Christ’s ministry reveals a God consistently committed to life, restoration, and wholeness.
Porter constructs her case through extensive biblical interpretation, particularly the healing ministry of Jesus and passages connecting Christ’s suffering with physical and spiritual restoration. “Truth plus untruth does not equal truth,” she writes, urging Christians to examine inherited religious teachings against Scripture. Jesus’ willingness to heal becomes central evidence: Porter contends that His compassion toward the sick reveals the Father’s character and that healing remains available to believers today.
The harder question—why sincere Christians sometimes pray without experiencing healing—receives considerable attention. Porter explores fear, doubt, unforgiveness, religious tradition, and misunderstandings of Scripture as possible barriers to receiving what she regards as an already-given promise. Her conclusions are unapologetically rooted in charismatic Christianity and may prove challenging for readers whose traditions understand suffering or unanswered prayer differently. Still, Porter’s purpose remains consistently pastoral rather than academic.
The book gradually expands beyond physical illness to emotional wounds, forgiveness, relationships, prayer, spiritual warfare, and the Holy Spirit. “God’s gifts are for today,” Porter declares, presenting speaking in tongues, supernatural healing, and spiritual gifts as continuing realities rather than phenomena confined to the early church. Personal testimonies add intimacy, blending Bible study with memoir and devotional encouragement. Porter’s energetic, sermon-like approach occasionally revisits similar arguments, but the repetition reinforces the book’s central conviction. By its later chapters, individual healing has become part of a larger call for spiritual renewal and for a church willing to reclaim the supernatural faith of the New Testament. “God is faithful and is counting on our faithfulness!” she writes. Readers of F. F. Bosworth’s Christ the Healer and T. L. Osborn’s Healing the Sick will find familiar ground here.
