The Power of Four: Elements, Humors, Temperaments, Types by W. Nikola-Lisa

A brisk and brainy tour of the patterns that have shaped how humans understand the world and themselves.

Nikola-Lisa’s latest book offers an illuminating tour of the fourfold ideas that have shaped Western thought for more than two millennia. The book begins with a deceptively simple question: Why four? From the four seasons and cardinal directions to the elements, bodily humors, temperaments, and psychological types, Western thinkers have repeatedly divided the world into groups of four. Nikola-Lisa traces that impulse from the pre-Socratic philosophers and Empedocles’ four elements (fire, earth, air, and water) through Plato and Aristotle, who transformed them into increasingly elaborate systems of matter and qualities.

“Four made sense,” Nikola-Lisa observes, since “philosophers had been viewing the world that way for quite some time.” The framework later migrated into medicine, where Hippocratic and Galenic traditions linked health to humoral balance, eventually giving rise to theories of the sanguine, choleric, melancholic, and phlegmatic temperaments. From there, the book moves into modern personality theory, particularly Jungian typology, the Myers-Briggs system, and Keirsey’s temperament theory, which transform “fourness” into “fourfoldness,” with sixteen personality types arranged in a “4 × 4 box pattern.”

Nikola-Lisa also examines the remarkable proliferation of later four-part schemes, from personality colors to animal-based types, showing how readily the ancient classificatory impulse adapts to modern life. Yet Nikola-Lisa does not mistake historical persistence for scientific validity, and contemporary trait psychology complicates the categorical models explored throughout. The occasional biographical detour slows the argument, but Nikola-Lisa’s conversational prose makes Greek cosmology, Galenic medicine, and personality theory unusually approachable.

A thoughtful, accessible account of our persistent urge to organize complexity and ourselves into fours.
