The Terror & The Sword (The Hueik Trilogy, Book 1) by Trevor Warren

A stellar start to a promising series.

Warren kick-starts his Hueik Trilogy with a dark, gripping tale of blood, war, and ancient threats returning. In a dungeon cell, the infamous bandit Bowv waits to die until King Rono, his brother, comes calling. What starts as a routine request to find a body turns into a terrifying discovery: the corpse is a vampire, and vampires were supposed to be extinct. With war erupting and the dead refusing to stay buried, Rono needs Bowv’s brutal mind to save the kingdom. But even Bowv may not be enough.

Warren sets his story across a backdrop of decaying empires, well-defended cities, and long-dormant gods, giving the whole world a weathered, lived-in feel. It’s a place where myth bleeds into history and politics cut deeper than swords. The prose shifts from sharp to reflective, slowing at times but always deliberate. And yes, the book leans heavily on male voices for now. But with war looming and vampires possibly returning, Warren sets the stage for a broader reckoning.

A bloody, brainy ride full of blades, banter, and buried truths.
