Series review: Cape May (Book #1 and #2) by Kimberly Brighton

A richly layered, funny, and compelling beach read…

From the bustling courtrooms of Philadelphia to the tranquil sandy shores of the Jersey Cape, Brighton’s tender yet humorous Cape May series explores the power of choice and fate and the complexities of love. Delaney, a renowned defense lawyer, had her life planned out: a quiet wedding by the sea with her childhood love, Dalton. But fate has other ideas as their big day approaches. Delaney’s maid of honor, Kate, is forced to confront her past and Cleo begins to question her casual relationship with a hot lawyer. Meanwhile, Marley must choose between her dream of being a lawyer and staying in her hometown for love. As these women face unexpected twists in their lives, they may find that their destinies are not so certain after all. In the second installment, Marley had no time for distractions as she studied for the bar exam and hoped to land a lawyer job. But her ex-boyfriend appeared on a dating show, causing chaos and leading to a messy drama. Meanwhile, Charlotte is set on making partner at her law firm. On a work trip, she meets Jake who challenges her beliefs about life and love. Teenage Bella navigates the typical struggles of growing up until she discovers what truly matters.

Brighton’s mastery of complex yet endearing characters shines through as the tensions between each couple reach a boiling point before finally simmering down. With her astute understanding of human psychology, she weaves a story that is both heartwarming and full of passion and vulnerability. Each character’s individual beliefs heavily influence their pursuit of love, expertly portrayed in their stories. Delaney’s need for control clashes with Dalton’s spontaneity, leading to frustration before a change in perspective. Kate’s uncertainty about what she wants in a partner is resolved when she finds her perfect match. The chemistry between Marley and Sam keeps the things deliciously hot. Cleo’s journey to finally growing up, and Bella’s metamorphosis from victim to empowered individual who finds connection with Eli is depicted with sincerity. As Charlotte grapples with career fears and relationship anxieties, her journey towards self-discovery is both relatable and touching.

An entertaining rom-com that’s full of heart and soul.
