Rose’s yearning for belonging informs most of the narrative, which starts off with her as an awkward teenager seeking acceptance but shifts as she gets sucked in the mystery of the book and begins to find her own self. With its atmospheric setting, memorable characters, and a pair of protagonists whose individual turmoil is central to their coming-of-age stories, the novel makes for a stunner. Un-put-downable.
