DiBianca does a solid job blending excellent worldbuilding and murder investigation and deploys a conversational, witty prose to offer a delicious, well-crafted mystery. She paints a vivid picture of Cassie’s dilemma, gradually increasing the urgency and intensity of the situation and keeping readers on their toes as the story progresses forward. Readers will root for the headstrong young woman as she sleuths her way through the deep web of mystery and intrigue surrounding Lacey’s death. There are plenty of red herrings and shocking revelations, and the secondary cast, especially the adorable pair of Dolly and Greg, is skillfully portrayed. As the story progresses, the clash between Frank’s self-assured attitude and Cassie’s cynical outlook creates a captivating dynamic. Despite the immense darkness at the heart of the story (a young child with learning difficulty being killed), the narrative is suffused with heartwarming warmth of cozy bonds of love, friendship, and family. The story progresses logically and eventually culminates in a thrilling, adrenaline-pumping climax between Cassie and the malevolent villain. Filled with unexpected plot twists, humor, and anticipation, this is a surefire winner.
