Earnest and perceptive; A spellbinding tale of family, community, and self-discovery.

The animals of Earthwood are in grave danger. Led by Gollah and trusting each other implicitly, Gavin and his brothers, Cuyler and Trisbert, aim to conquer Everdark and traverse the Serpentine Ridge unscathed, despite a plethora of terrifying creatures blocking their path. Gutteridge has written a timely tale that stresses on how environmental destruction needs to be taken seriously. At the same time, the book also celebrates the power of courage, perseverance, family, friendship, and camaraderie. The pacing is measured, and the worldbuilding is cleverly wrought and inviting. Sensible and tenacious, Gavin is wholly likable, and so are Trisbert, Cuyler, Adderly, Hubert, Renée, Quiver, and Wylee. Gavin’s nuanced relationship with his brother infuses heart and warmth.  A shocking twist and an especially nasty villain will keep readers hooked until the satisfying ending. Bolstered by stunning black-and-white illustrations, this delightful fantasy truly stands out. A must-have for libraries shelves.
