A fun, imaginative, and vibrant story full of high action and wordplay… A must-read middle grade fantasy.

In Wright’s enthralling second installment in The Adventures of Toby Baxter, thirteen-year-old Toby has to interrupt his winter break to save the dying magical land of RiverHome. Toby is excited for his winter break. But when RiverHome, the magical land from his last visit, is threatened by trolls who have stolen the life force of the Sword, Toby must return to save it and face off against his arch nemesis Clygon. Toby’s power is again tested: will he use it wisely or give into fear? Wright’s expert worldbuilding is bolstered by vivid, detailed descriptions and smart, crisp prose. This installment brings additional excitement to the story as Sid also gets entangled in the frightful happenings at RiverHome, finding himself face to face with Clygon and his army of trolls. Wright sets up all manner of incredible challenges for Toby, Sid, and the rest of their cohort, utilizing action to boost the tension to the narration that is enhanced by a charming cast. The sharp, witty dialogue inspires giggles of delight. There is an abundance of entertaining characters, such as ogres, trolls, elves, gnomes, wolves along with humans, and a meaningful theme of loyalty to one’s friends.  At its core, this is a story of courage, resilience, community, and friendship. A climactic ending resolves all key questions except for a final twist that suggests further excitement in a sequel. Fans of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series will want to take a look.
