A darkly intriguing mix of SF and crime drama…
Jackson amalgamates a near-future sci-fi setting and a murder mystery plot into a dark crime saga in his latest Chubby Pone novels. Chubby Pone is content being a troubleshooter, leaving his dark days of being a hitman behind. When two teens from rival crime families, Prohibition and Hip-hopper, die in a car bomb, mayor Crowe, fearing a possible gang war between the rival families, approaches Red for help. Red assigns a reluctant Pone to the case. Pone begins to look into the bombing, unaware of the danger awaiting him ahead. With a plethora of quirky characters inveigled into many subplots, the story becomes confusing at times, but Jackson keeps tight reins on his plot, keeping readers invested. There is plenty of gang violence and bloodshed, however the novel’s tone largely remains upbeat. Pone is an immensely endearing lead, and his bond with Red, Birdie, and others is rooted in reality. The solution to the mystery is both credible and shocking. Readers are in for a rollicking trip.
