The thorough, tight plotting allows for pitch-perfect pacing that keeps the reader invested from start to finish. Elora’s genuine struggle for survival, while trying to keep others’ morale high, carries the reader to the story’s intense resolution. Mackay uses Elora’s single-minded resilience to examine themes of survival, freedom, oppression, co-existence, friendship, and sacrifice. Will, Sarah, and Elora steer the story, and their action-packed mission is grounded in strong team dynamics. It’s easy to root for these driven, hard-edged heroes as they stand up to the impossible challenge.
