Intriguingly structured, beautifully written… A compelling literary balancing act that is both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Hazy memories and family ties converge in unexpected ways in Dale’s deeply felt latest, a story that explores family dynamics, abuse, and trauma. Trying to come to terms with the ordeal of her troubled childhood, psychologist Estelle Caylie is barely able to concentrate on her demanding job. When her brother GJ dies under suspicious circumstances, Estelle sets out to find her estranged sister to unite the family for the funeral. But old hazy memories begin to unravel, threatening to destroy the life she has built for herself. Dale sensitively depicts his troubled characters, and is meticulous when it comes to laying out his elaborate storyline. He skillfully explores his characters’ interpersonal dynamics, capturing the complexity of loss and trauma. He weaves in some scandal—a murder, old secrets, and enough life-and-death situations to keep readers guessing. A rich backstory that explores Estelle’s disparate memories of the past, GJ’s suspicious death, their parents’ backstory, and a highly satisfying ending add welcome texture. But all of this is not just about prompting the next page turn. The novel explores familial bonds, mental illness, love, longing, pain, disappointment, grief, regret, and redemption while delving into questions of how old, unresolved issues have a way to eat away what is good, leaving only destruction behind and how family is born of blood, but it doesn’t depend on blood. Well-written and observed, the novel makes for a stunner.
