Intense, sexy, and so damn entertaining…
An intriguing and lesser-known chapter of French/English history comes to life in Todd-Hunter’s immersive, sexy historical time-travel tale, the first installment in the Coeur de Lion series. Aspiring historical scholar Alixandra Evans finds her life turn upside down after an ancient brooch transports her back to twelfth-century France. When she meets Richard, Duke of Aquitaine and the future King of England, she finds herself drawn to the charismatic man. But staying in the era is not an option, especially when it can alter the course of history. Well-researched and cleverly constructed, the novel directly takes readers into the twelfth-century France, beginning with Alix’s accidental arrival in the middle of nowhere and moving to Richard’s duchy, and eventually her entry into King Henry II’s court. The passionate heroics, the love affair of Alix and Richard, and the history portions of the book really shine. And so does Todd-Hunter’s large cast of colorful, fully fleshed-out characters. The fiercely headstrong Alix impresses, but it’s Richard who steals the show: he looks every bit the future king of England. Although the narrative explores the twelfth-century era’s customs, culture, social hierarchy, and political intrigues, Alix and Richard’s intense romance stays at the heart of the story. There are no timeline shifts, with Alix remaining in the twelfth-century France, and still the author manages to structure a plot with plenty of satisfying twists and shocking revelations. A cliffhanger ending will leave readers hungry for the next installment. Romance, passionate sex, political drama and bravery make for fine historical fiction, and it’s all here. A definite page-turner.
