Scion of Lightning: an epic fantasy adventure (The Stormcrafter Chronicles Book 1) by J.T. Moy

Thoroughly immersive, wholly satisfying… A page-turner.

Moy takes readers on a heart-racing adventure in his debut installment in The Stormcrafter Chronicles series. Struggling with his traumatic past, Jaks has always found it hard to overcome his self-doubts and insecurities, becoming the target of bullies in his military training squadron. But when a fighting incident brings him face to face with his volatile yet powerful magic, he has no option but to tread the dangerous path of the electromancer. With the brutal king of Voros invading the land with axe warriors, skyships, and dragons, Jaks and his battlemage master set on to train his powers while uncovering a potent artifact that could halt the rampaging enemy. Sketching out just enough about Jaks’s electromancer powers to build momentum for the second volume, this first installment does excellent work constructing a well-wrought-out fantasy world, where people have abilities to wield magic and survival depends on one’s ability to fight. Moy convincingly and compellingly explores Jaks’s partial transformation from a timid, reserved young man reluctant to explore his inner power into a more mature electromancer willing to do what is necessary while leaving enough room for a complete transformation. Relevant themes of self-discovery, identity, and family ties are woven skillfully into the narrative along with much-needed messages about overcoming self-doubts and inner fears. With plenty of political intrigue, well-drawn action sequences, and strong female characters, there’s a lot to pique readers’ interests. But it’s the unique magic system and beautifully rendered sibling relationship that make this a must-read.
