Perry kicks start her promising dystopian series, The Rising Resolution, with this action-packed, emotionally resonant tale. The fiercely independent Arela Harkess has never known her parents. As an orphan, she has spent her life as a ward of the state in a totalitarian government-led Osiris. But the fact that there’s no record whatsoever of her parents’ existence, weighs heavy on her mind. Her search for truth leads her down a path filled with corruption and treachery, putting everything she loves at risk, including her own life. Perry’s vivid writing strikes a deep, emotional chord, immersing readers in her characters’ yearnings and hopes. The thrilling and twisty narrative is well served by the intriguing interpersonal dynamic between various characters, particularly between Arela and her friends. Relentless and reckless, Arela makes for an endearing protagonist. The quiet Cenric, with his struggles with loneliness and emotional pain is equally convincing. The plot moves across a finely constructed futuristic backdrop, with unpredictable twists and revelations keeping the pages turning. This is a winner.
