The Wanderer’s Notebook Volume III by Christopher Emrys

Deeply rewarding and emotionally resonant…

Emrys continues his thoughtful, low-key epic series with a collection of stories that favors intimacy over spectacle. In “Discovery,” a wood elf scout named Ymladdwr unearths a mind-reactive portal in the wilderness. Alongside Gwyddoniaeth, a high elf scholar, he steps through. Their bond anchors the book’s multiversal sprawl. The other stories orbit this thread. In “The Long Dark Road,” a boy fleeing his life meets something hungry in the woods. “The Sage” follows a girl whose walk in the forest shatters her illusions. “Songs of the Deep” pulls the core duo into the drowned realm of the merfolk. “Inside the Blizzard” trades fantasy for stark realism. “Julia” follows a vampire and his protégé as they expand their cult, and in “Journey Beyond III,” a human crew wakes mid-crisis on an alien ship. “Freshman Life” closes the volume with a sharp, quiet tragedy. Some stories are mythic, others contemporary or cosmic. But all share Emrys’s atmospheric precision and moral undercurrents. At its heart, this is less a book about what’s out there and more about what’s worth protecting at home.

A quietly radical fantasy collection about rebuilding after loss and the gentle power of relationships that grow rather than blaze.
