THE SPY FROM BEIJING: AN ESPIONAGE THRILLER by JOAN M KOP

An enjoyable tale of conspiracy and mayhem…

An undercover FBI agent is caught up in a dangerous conspiracy as she also battles personal demons in Kop’s latest thriller. Jenny Chu meets Dave Kamakaris, an undercover FBI agent, on a flight, follows his suit and joins the FBI. Meanwhile, in China, Yìchén Zhang is forced by the MSS to defect to the U.S., where Yìchén must secure LineageFinder’s DNA bank or risk harm coming to his mother. When Jenny’s path crosses with Yìchén, she realizes Yìchén is more than an enemy agent. Kop’s writing style is confident and engaging, crafting exciting scenes of tense action and also managing to capture the softer, more intimate moments with ease. Jenny and Yìchén’s individual moral dilemmas act as the main drivers of the book, while the twisted story of China trying to secure American populations’ DNA makes an essential part of the conspiracy plot. Jenny is an easy to root for, complex and likable character, but it is Yìchén who, with his moral quandaries steals the show. The supporting cast is well developed. This winding espionage story makes for a page-turner.
