Against the Grain by Peter Lovesey

An apt farewell…

Lovesey ends his long-running Detective Peter Diamond Mystery series with a final case that takes the endearing detective away from his usual patch. While on a short break in the countryside, Diamond gets a call from his old colleague Julie Hargreaves to take a second look at a manslaughter conviction connected to a grain silo accident in the village of Baskerville. At first the case seems straightforward, but as Diamond digs deeper, something doesn’t feel right. Lovesey gives Diamond a change of scenery in this last one, dropping him into a village murder mystery with lots of nods to classic detectives. The book strikes a great balance between humor and tradition,  embracing the charm of a cozy mystery while staying true to Diamond’s no-nonsense approach. Some long time fans may miss Diamond’s team in Bath but the story stands on its own. Saying goodbye to Peter Diamond is hard but Lovesey gives him a great send off. A winner.
