A compelling tale of female resilience…
Under the moonlight, Kate escapes London and her abusive partner to seek refuge in Weyward Cottage, a secluded inheritance. As she uncovers the cottage’s dark history, dating back to the 17th-century witch-hunts, secrets emerge. In 1619, Altha faces trial for a farmer’s death, accused of witchcraft. Raised with nature-based magic, she must defend herself in a time when women like her are seen as dangerous. In 1942, Violet, confined by societal expectations in a decaying estate, discovers traces of her mother’s mysterious past, hinting at a connection to the word “weyward.”
The story follows three women—Altha in the 1600s, Violet in the 1940s, and Kate in the present—each battling the oppressive forces of their time. While the story leans on familiar tropes, if you’re a fan of witches defying the patriarchy, it delivers. The narrative is dark, tackling themes of generational trauma with graphic depictions of abuse, rape, and abortion. Yet, it strikes a good balance between the bleak and the empowering. The misogyny these women endure might feel overwhelming, but it makes the climax that much more satisfying. If you can handle the intensity, the book is a compelling tale of female resilience.
