THE POPPY FIELD by Caroline Kellems

A heartfelt meditation on desire and responsibility.

Kellems’s latest novel is a captivating exploration of love, loyalty, and the complexities of human relationships against a backdrop of intrigue and danger. Katherine’s life is uprooted when her husband decides to move to Guatemala for missionary work. Adapting to the colorful but dangerous surroundings proves challenging as she grapples with marital struggles and personal desires. An encounter with the enigmatic Alfonso leads her down a path of deceit and danger, forcing her to choose between loyalty to her family and finding fulfillment. Katherine is a relatable character who yearns to find some sort of normality in her marriage, and though Alfonso’s presence in her life is a focal point, it never outshines the heroine’s growth. Kellems’ rich portrayal of Guatemala culture, foods, traditions, and everyday living provides authenticity to the story, and her skillful handling of Katherine’s clash of desires and duties creates tension and moral ambiguity throughout her journey. A textured and layered human drama.
