Then Came Four by Edward Izzi

A dark, timely tale of racial inequality, hatred, and violence.

Izzi’s latest is a hard-edged crime drama that offers poignant insights into the enduring struggle for truth and redemption in an imperfect world. In the volatile year of 1964, Detroit was a battleground for African Americans. The corrupt “Tac Squad,” also known as ‘The Big Four,’ ruled the streets with their brutal tactics and oppressive curfew. Anthony ‘Tony’ Fiorello, a white law student and Wesley Norris, a black graduate became friends. When Norris uncovered the corruption of The Big Four police force, he used his position to fight back. His death in November 1968 prompted Fiorello to leave his job and join the fight for justice, which sparked a revolution among oppressed minorities and led to riots against their oppressors.

From the very beginning, Izzi’s allegory about the struggles of people of color is starkly evident. As the narrative unfolds into a gripping courtroom drama, the plot thickens, drawing attention to the broader societal issues of racism, poverty, and the turbulent gang culture of 1960s Detroit. These subtle allusions serve as potent reminders of the interconnectedness of global events, adding depth and relevance to the story’s backdrop. Yet, it is not just a commentary on the politics and plight of colored communities, but also a personal exploration of individual characters, whose actions defy readers’ assumptions. With fully fleshed-out characters on their own intricate journeys, the tale is rooted in reality, exploring themes of justice, resilience, and the complexities of being human. Raw and gritty.
