A Story of Whoa by Chris Corbett (Author), Richardo Galvao (Illustrator)

A charming, fun story that examines relevant and complex themes…

Corbett examines themes of violence, bullying, hunger, poverty, and homelessness via a young child in his thought-provoking children’s picture book. Young Whoa loves to spend time with his father, and their Friday evenings time is one of his favorites except for one thing: the nightly news broadcast that shows tragedies, violence, and cruelty happening around the world, making him sad. When his dad explains what Whoa is seeing on the news, it gets Whoa thinking. He knows he needs to find a way and beat all the bad things. Corbett deftly develops an endearing young protagonist whose palpably felt emotions and unique quest drive the lyrical narrative. This simplicity of the story beautifully communicates how little Whoa is feeling and, as the story moves forward, young readers learn what approach he is going to take to fulfill his goal. Richardo Galvao’s vivid illustrations employ bright and inviting hues and uncomplicated paneling, complimenting the story’s somber mood. A must-have for public and school libraries as well as every youngster’s bookshelf.
