An immersive, thrilling read…

A looming conflict tests the strength of two young women in Todd’s fast-paced, intriguing first installment in the Gadyeni Cycle series. There are still six months left for the examiners to arrive from the prestigious Academy of Teyrnas to test Realta Haar and her friends when a mysterious stranger offers them admission to the academy as a reward for catching an elusive thief. But an unexpected incident separates Realta from her friends, leaving her with the thief. Together, the young women must navigate a world of magic and politics as well as their own roles in a looming conflict if they want to survive. Todd’s worldbuilding is skillfully detailed, Realta’s inner turmoil is rendered with drama, and her connection with Serena is stirring. The subplot involving Serena’s backstory adds further drama and tension as Todd thoughtfully reflects on the complicated nature of familial relationships and friendship while exploring agency, individuality, trust, betrayal, and free will. Though loose editing mars reading experience, Todd’s meticulous attention to detail and Realta’s hard-won acceptance of herself make for a page-turning, inspiring read.
