This is a story of good versus evil, full of twisting spacecraft technology and otherworldly adventure. Johnson deftly creates a futuristic setting that is both authentic and atmospheric. The narrative is a feat of considerable imagination and attitude: there are time machines, magnificent spaceships, and interplanetary intrigue: there is also plenty of family drama, individual struggles, and poignant emotions that add welcome texture (the emotional element will tug at readers\u2019 hearts as courageous, goodhearted protagonists face mortal danger from truly cruel and evil souls). Despite his obvious faults, Steve is an endearing protagonist. The pacing is swift and plotting tight, and the action scenes are crafted with skill. Johnson adeptly combines elements of space opera and adventure fiction while raising questions about power politics, totalitarian systems, family ties, courage, betrayal, redemption, and the nature of greed.
