A stirring chronicle of what it’s really like to be a counterintelligence officer in a war zone…

Grantham’s powerful account takes the reader inside America’s many counterintelligence missions. As a counterintelligence officer with the elite and secretive Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Grantham went to Kuwait, Afghanistan, and later Iraq during the height of the Iraq war, planned and executed several counterintelligence missions, faced harrowing dangers, and successfully completed covert actions. Grantham’s cracking storytelling pulls the reader in and wraps them in its own sense of wonder. He illustrates not only intelligence tradecraft but also the unforeseen failure of politics, imagination, and planning that throws those on ground in extreme danger. The narrative serves as a key resource for our understanding of how counterintelligence practices are still one of the military’s most important yet under-utilized tools to counter terrorism. Told with grit, honesty, and remarkable intensity, this is a must-read for anyone interested in the inside story of America’s various counterintelligence missions in Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
