Of Bread And Wine by Edward Izzi

Bristling with tension, gripping from the first page, this is conspiracy thriller done right.

An intricately constructed plot and high action lift Izzi’s excellent latest action thriller, featuring Chicago-based criminal attorney Michael Prescott. Michael is in Rome, visiting his best friend, Monsignor Robert Cavalieri, a Special Diplomat to the Vatican when he learns about Giovanni Cardinal Masellis’s deathbed confession about the brutal murder of Pope John Paul I and the missing Coins of Gregorio, a priceless gift donated by the influential Italian mobster, Don Giancarlo Cesario to the Pope. Known as Mafia Cardinal, Giovanni was considered the most evil cardinal in his days. Things get complicated after the story is leaked in the press by the ambitious Italian newspaper editor, Max Gianforte. As search for the missing coins intensifies, various major players enter the race, including Italian crime boss Calogero “Don Charlie” Cesario, who wants the coins at any cost even if it means taking multiple lives. Izzi has an impressive grasp of his material, be it the gritty world of mafia or shady dealings of church officials. The story, which has a rush to it right from the beginning, never slows down even when multiple characters make their entry, with their individual stories expanding into mini sub plots. Izzi makes good use of usual conspiracy thriller elements of religion, murder, mysticism, romance, and action, delivering plenty of thrilling cat-and-mouse maneuvers and life-or-death cliffhangers. He is an expert when it comes to pacing, stretching out the main mystery through perfectly paced chapters that give rise to gusts of well-constructed action. The narrative remains engrossing, prompting quick turns of the page and readings in one sitting. A thorny relationship between Michael and Sienna, a cast of fully realized, entertaining characters, almost nonstop action, and brisk pace enthrall. The prose is crisp, dialogue sharp, and there is authenticity to Izzy’s worldbuilding. Michael is analytical, sharp, and wholly sympathetic. It’s impossible not to root for him. Sienna, with her toughness, self-sufficiency, and a tint of intrigue to her personality is equally convincing. Izzi does a good job building suspense as he gradually reveals the intricate connections among the top players. The exposition is convincing, and various conspiracies and secrets makes readers feel true horror at the ways of men. Incredibly complicated and utterly exciting, the novel should easily find a home with the lovers of gritty action thrillers.
