Special Means by Andrew Ceroni

An electrifying mix of heated action, nearly continuous tension, and tight plotting…

Award-winning Ceroni’s rousing latest takes Agent McClure to Denver to unravel a sinister plan involving confiscation of the military district of Washington and takeover of the federal government. When CIA Agent Dave McClure left for Denver to investigate bizarre lethal violence being waged with advanced military weaponry against organized street gangs, he had no inkling some rouge elements in Homeland Security and the Defense Department had been orchestrating a conspiracy against the president in an effort to overthrow the federal government. With nation’s security at risk and his own life in danger, McClure must do everything in his power to stop the sinister forces from realizing their sinister motive. Other than use of the usual genre tropes—a national-level conspiracy of serious consequences, an enduring hero, defectors at the highest levels of government, high action, and nerve-wracking tension—Ceroni keeps the emotional quotient of the story ripe with exploration of the enduring friendships and strong family ties, capturing the tender love between McClure and his wife with candor and honesty. The initial part of the book is comparatively quite with emphasis on bringing various smaller sub plots together. But once the pace picks up, the nail-biting suspense and the well-constructed action scenes (which are tense and often shocking) more than compensate for the initial quieter moments. Ceroni does a masterly job of weaving together the various storylines into the tight, brisk plot. Conspiracy thrillers fans won’t want to miss this nuanced, multilayered novel. A thorough page-turner.
