A feeble attempt at a psychological thriller…
Slater’s latest is not only thin on plotting but also offers a premise that strains credibility. A broken marriage and the unexpected death of her husband forces Freya Miller to sell her home and move somewhere affordable with Skye, her 5-year-old daughter. When a stranger approaches Freya in a coffee shop and offers her a luxury apartment, Adder House, at a ridiculously cheap price, Freya jumps on the chance. But things are not as they seem on the surface. There are people determined to keep a terrible past, very much alive. The utter lack of a credible storyline is not the only problem with this unimpressive thriller: Slater’s characters are paper-thin, and almost all the situations in the novel seem to be wholly contrived. Fans of psychological thrillers will be wiser to skip it.
