An intricate, engrossing police procedural…
Fans of character-based, intricate British police procedurals will find plenty to like in Collett’s standalone crime drama featuring paralegal Stefan Greaves and rookie policeman Mick Fraser. Rita Todd, a pediatric nurse at a local hospital, has grave concerns about something sinister going on in the hospital’s postnatal ward. She goes missing after visiting Stefan Greaves at his law firm. Soon after Stefan is brutally beaten. Rookie policeman, Mick Fraser gets entangled in the investigation of Rita’s disappearance while investigating Stefan’s mugging. Things take a sinister turn after Rita turns up dead. The book is written in a first-person narrative (Stefan and Mick’s alternatively), and the characters are multidimensional, thoroughly sketched, and utterly humane. The layered narrative and clever plotting make the book a definite crowd pleaser. Despite a somewhat implausible solution to the mystery in the end, readers will look forward to reading more stories featuring the uncanny duo of Stefan and Mick.
