Maddie falls in love with Ian overseas where she’s writing a travel guide and he is working with the British Military. It takes years before they finally get married and have baby Charlie. The things look fairly idyllic on the surface, but appearances can be deceptive. Ian starts hoarding survivalist supplies in the basement of his home after Maddie’s scary accident during a camping trip. Told in alternating perspectives between Maddie and Ian with excerpts from Maddie’s writing therapy, the narrative takes you to the day of the brutal, bloody murder in the family home. In the first half, the story jumps around quite a lot in time, and with multiple point of views it becomes tedious to read, but the pace becomes faster afterward and the multiple smaller bits come together. A stunningly written dark thriller with ample psychological depth, Beautiful Bad will appeal to lovers of psychological suspense.
