It doesn’t take long for the house to be filled with family and friends, a feast of delicious food, warm-hearted expressions of gratitude, and a big pork bone for Scar, naturally. The narrative is child-appropriate, with simple, descriptive language that highlights ever hungry and excited Scar’s goofy personality. The pacing is brisk, and Fernández’s simple text makes wonderful use of specific details; together text and images speak to the warmth of the bond Scar shares with his best friend Vida. Shelby Faircloth’s vibrant, tenderly rendered illustrations complement the text and add lovely touches of both humor and warmth. Fun and informative, the book makes for a must-have for little one’s bedside shelves.
