The Patient by Steena Holmes

A lackluster work…

Holmes explores a cat-and-mouse game between a psychotherapist and a killer in this psychological thriller. Fighting with her own past demons, Danielle Rycroft is trying to set her psychotherapist’s practice in the small town of Cheshire. When a string of murders rocks the lives of town inhabitants, Danielle becomes convinced that one of her patients is behind the killings. Holmes’s intriguing theme and an interesting storyline are marred by her flat writing and under-developed characterization. Danielle and Tami are nothing more than characters in a book, and readers fail to connect with either of them. The other characters are equally unconvincing. While the climax is shocking and satisfyingly well-done, Holmes’ flat narration fails to keep the reader interested.
